"What turns that project into a community are the people who engage with one another around that code. No matter the maturity level of your project, one of the most important things you can do to ensure its success is encourage and maintain engagement with its users and contributors." - The Open Source Way 2.0
At Artefactual, we have been acknowledging the crucial role of the contributor community in the success of the AtoM and Archivematica projects. Contributions to the code, documentation, and user forum are vital for sustaining and expanding both projects. We are eager to enhance our support for this community.
In January, we hosted an inaugural Archivematica Contributor’s Gathering over two days. Contributors from different organisations were invited to attend. At the Gathering, they shared their current work and Archivematica project blockers. We held discussions on how Artefactual can better support the community and facilitate contributions.
In February, we hosted the second AtoM Contributor’s Gathering. This one-day event welcomed both newcomers and familiar participants. Contributors shared their ongoing projects and challenges with AtoM, and in some instances, discovered they had worked on similar features. The main discussion centred around uniting the community to collaborate on enhancing the AtoM Project.
From both Gatherings, Artefactual is looking at how we can develop more openly and work closer with contributors. If you are interested in getting more involved with contributions, or have any questions about the Gatherings, please contact contributors@artefactual.com.
Thank you to all of the participants. We look forward to bringing new changes to the contributor community over the next few months!
